A Family Guide

Collins-Rhodes Elementary is committed to ensuring that every student has the tools, support, and encouragement they need to succeed. To help families better understand how schools work together to support children, we are excited to share the Family Guide to Alabama’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

This guide explains how Alabama schools provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support so that every child can thrive. Think of MTSS as a ladder of support — starting with strong instruction for all students and offering extra help for those who need it.

What Families Will Learn in the Guide:

🔹 What is MTSS?
MTSS is a step-by-step system that helps all students. It begins with general classroom support for everyone. If a child needs more help, they receive small-group or individual support designed specifically for their needs.

🔹 Response to Intervention (RTI)
Focused on academics, RTI provides extra teaching or practice in areas like reading or math. Progress is closely monitored so teachers can adjust support quickly to help students succeed.

🔹 Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS)
PBS helps create a positive school environment by teaching, encouraging, and rewarding good behavior. It ensures that students are supported not only academically, but also in how they act and interact with others.

🔹 Problem Solving Team (PST)
This team of teachers and staff meets to find the best solutions for students who are experiencing difficulties. They work together — and with families — to create plans that support student success.

The Tiered Levels of Support

  • Tier 1: Classroom instruction and strategies that work for most students.

  • Tier 2: Small-group instruction or extra practice for students who need more help.

  • Tier 3: Individualized, one-on-one support for students needing intensive help.

The goal is always to provide the right help at the right time so every child can achieve success.

How Families Can Support Their Child

Parents and caregivers play an important role in MTSS. The guide encourages families to:

  • Stay informed about the supports their child is receiving.

  • Communicate regularly with teachers and staff.

  • Reinforce learning and positive behaviors at home.

  • Encourage a positive mindset and perseverance.

  • Attend meetings with teachers or the PST to share valuable input.
